Cello

Cello is my most recent instrumental love, and I cannot imagine the string family without it. The cello has a unique expressiveness and versatility that I adore. Can you imagine a symphony orchestra without the cello? Or the cello’s unique contribution to genres like jazz and bluegrass? I started learning cello in a group class in high school as part of a pedagogy course, and fell in love with it. As with violin and piano lessons, my goal is to equip my students with the basic techniques they will need to learn whatever style of cello playing they are interested in. To this goal, I start students on either the Suzuki Cello Method or the ABC’s for Cello Method, depending on the student. Suzuki is a great option for students who prefer the support of practicing with a friend, parent, or recording device, and ABC’s for Cello is fantastic for all those independent learners out there!

When learning a new instrument, it’s important to remember to pace yourself! Playing the cello is a physical and mental workout, and just like you may not score a goal or ace a quiz on your first try, students may not leave their first lesson playing their first song impeccably. We’ll spend the first couple lessons learning technique, and talking about the kind of music the student wants to play! Once they have the basics down, we’ll learn simple, recognizable songs, and keep going from there! We’ll also supplement all instrumental instruction with appropriate scales, etudes, and theory, to give the student the tools needed to accomplish their musical goals!
